چکیده

Two-stream instability in pulsar magnetospheres generates longitudinal waves, which fall in the superluminal part of the dispersion curve due to stimulated scattering. A superluminal longitudinal wave propagating in a curved magnetic field turns into an electromagnetic wave and may escape from plasma in the form of an ordinary transverse wave. However, this wave may go to the subluminal part of the dispersion curve, where it ultimately decays through Landau damping, due to linear transformation. Linear transformation of waves in an ultrarelativistic electron–positron plasma embedded in a superstrong magnetic field is considered. The transformation is shown to occur only in the case of propagation at very small angles to the magnetic field; this process cannot hinder the escape of waves from pulsar magnetospheres.

Parametrically driven force-free regime in rotating pulsar magnetospheres

The problem of reconstruction of the pulsar magnetospheres nearby the light cylinder surface is studied. It is shown that, on the basis of the Euler, continuity and induction equations, there is a possibility of parametrically excited rotational energy pumping process into the drift modes. As a result, the toroidal component of the magnetic field increases very rapidly. The increment is analyze...

Excitation of Alfvén Waves and Pulsar Radio Emission

We analyze mechanisms of the excitation of Alfvén wave in pulsar magnetospheres as a possible source of pulsar radio emission generation. We find that Cherenkov excitation of obliquely propagating Alfvén waves is inefficient, while excitation at the anomalous cyclotron resonance by the particles from the primary beam and from the tail of the bulk distribution function may have a considerable gr...

Nonlinear mode coupling in pair plasmas

Pulsar magnetospheres are composed of electron-positron plasmas characterised by broadband electromagnetic emission, the source of which remains elusive. This paper investigates one possible emission mechanism in which electrostatic oscillations are coupled to propagating electromagnetic waves by the magnetic field inhomogeneity, thus creating a source of radiation in the pulsar magnetosphere. ...

Nature of eclipsing pulsars

We present a model for pulsar radio eclipses in some binary systems, and test this model for PSRs B1957 + 20 and J2051− 0827. We suggest that in these binaries the companion stars are degenerate dwarfs with strong surface magnetic fields. The magnetospheres of these stars are permanently infused by the relativistic particles of the pulsar wind. We argue that the radio waves emitted by the pulsa...

Propagation effects in pulsar magnetospheres

Refraction and polarization transfer in an ultrarelativistic highly magnetized pulsar plasma are considered. Normal waves in the pulsar plasma are linearly polarized however circular polarization arises in the polarization limiting region if radiation propagates at an angle to the plane of the magnetic field lines. The rays go off this plane due to refraction or (and) due to rotation of the mag...
